Land clearing FAQ
Straight answers for Richland County property owners.
The work
What is the difference between land clearing and forestry mulching?
Forestry mulching grinds growth into mulch that stays on the ground. Land clearing in the wider sense can also mean removing roots and hauling material off. See forestry mulching and land clearing.
What happens to the stumps?
That is a separate line in the scope. Stumps can be ground below grade or removed. See stump grinding.
Can you clear around trees I want to keep?
Yes. Mark them on the walk-through and they go in the written scope as "stays".
Timing, rules & permits
When should trees be cleared?
Ohio Division of Wildlife and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service guidance recommends October 1 to March 31 where listed bats may be present. Read the guide for the exact wording.
Does clearing land need a permit?
Ohio EPA's construction stormwater permit covers clearing, grading and similar work that disturbs one or more acres. Zoning is local. See the permit guide.
Estimates
Are estimates written?
Yes. The scope lists what gets cleared, how debris is handled and the finished condition, so quotes can be compared line by line.
