Forestry mulching in Mansfield and Richland County, OH

One pass cuts and grinds the growth into a layer of mulch left on the ground.

Forestry mulching uses a machine with a grinding head to cut brush and small trees and leave the ground-up material behind as mulch. Nothing is burned and nothing is hauled, which is why it is often the quickest way to open up an overgrown lot.

It is a good fit for brush, saplings and thinner woods. It is not the same as taking a lot to bare soil: stumps and roots are cut low but stay in the ground unless the scope says otherwise, and a layer of mulch is not a graded surface.

Say what you want afterward. Mulch left in place, mulch raked back or stumps ground deeper are different finishes, and each goes into the written scope.

When mulching fits

  • Overgrown lots full of brush and small trees.
  • Trails and access paths through woods.
  • Fence lines that have filled in.
  • Thinning woodlots where you want to keep some trees.
  • Anywhere hauling off debris would cost more than the clearing.

Forestry Mulching: questions, answered

What happens to the mulch?

It stays on the ground by default and breaks down over time. It can be spread thinner or raked off if the scope says so.

Does mulching remove stumps?

It cuts them low. Grinding them below grade is a separate step. See stump grinding.

How much does it cost?

Published figures vary by density. See the cost page for a cited range and the factors that move it.
